In addition to sponsoring scholarly and creative presentations, the AFI will host an annual conference focusing on critical and emerging themes in African feminism.

The initiative aims at nurturing and developing a new cadre of African women leaders through training, coaching, mentoring, networking and research. It was launched at the International Women’s Leadership Conference held in Lilongwe, September 2013 attended by Dr. Antoinette Kankindi of SGC. This special issue, edited by the co-directors of the African Feminist Initiative (AFI) at Pennsylvania State University, is a partnership between Meridians and the AFI. The issue builds on the AFI's work to promote the study of African feminist thought and activism within the U.S. academy and to create equitable partnerships between scholars and practitioners of African feminism.
These women have inspired contemporary African feminists, who have contributed significantly to feminism in various ways—whether it be through art, music, writing, policy. By doing this, we will contribute to catalysing and sustaining the feminist movement in Africa and beyond. AFRICAN FEMINISM RISING In partnership with Global Fund for Women, our Movement Building and Advocacy program is currently implementing the East Africa Young Women Leadership and Mentoring Initiative (EAYWLMI) in Kenya and Tanzania.
