This source is a secondary Lieutenant James Cook was commissioned to command the bark Endeavour on 25 May 1768. He took charge on 27 May when his journal commences. The ship left England on 26 August 1768, and, sailing via Cape Horn, arrived at Matavai Bay, Tahiti, on 13 April 1769. Nov. anni 1768. Första expeditionen (1768–1771) Initiativet till första expeditionen togs av Royal Society. Cook, som vid 40 års ålder fortfarande var en ganska okänd person, HMS Endeavor var skeppet som James Cook seglade och var det första skeppet Fartyget lämnade Plymouth 1768 och resan tog alltså 2 år. Det är 1700-tals skildringarna av James Cooks resor, utgivna i åtta Cooks första resa (1768-1771) gavs ut i tre volymer 1773. Den skrevs av John Hawkesworth och bygger på de journaler som skrevs ombord på fartyget. Herman Dietrich Spöring deltog i James Cooks första jordenruntsegling.

In 1768 James Cook was selected to lead a joint Admiralty-Royal Society expedition to the Pacific. This was part of the Royal Society’s plan to use the Transit of Venus (the passing of Venus across the face of the Sun) to calculate the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Joseph Banks, a wealthy landowner and botanist, also joined the voyage with a party of scientists and artists.
