African American opera singer Matilda Sissieretta Jones was among the greatest sopranos of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She had a rich, powerful voice. Jones was born Matilda Sissieretta Joyner on January 5, either in 1868 or 1869, in Portsmouth, Virginia. When she was young her family moved to Rhode Island, where she sang in the church choir.
